FOR years it had been hidden behind the old church organ.
But now Studley Parish Church's rare George III coat of arms has been restored to its former glory and put back where it can be appreciated by all.
The large mural was rediscovered during the building of a new Millennium Room last year.
Dating from about 1800, it was a reminder that the monarch is the head of the Church of England and others like it were hung in churches across the country.
Many have been lost but Studley Church was lucky to find this one almost intact.
Years of grime had reduced the picture to a shadow of its former self so an appeal was made to raise the funds to have it professionally restored.
Hirst Conservation, based in Lincolnshire, carried out the work, which included careful cleaning and re-sewing it on to its backing.
A service of thanksgiving for the restoration will be held on April 17 at 10.45am.
