HEREFORD pole vaulter Irie Hill made a winning start to the new season victory at the Midland Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
Having only returned from Australia two days previously, Hill entered the competition at 3.50m with just herself and Emma Hornby still competing.
Hill cleared first time but Hornby was unsuccessful, leaving Hill clear to continue alone.
She raised the bar to 3.70m and again went clear first time, before deciding to put the bar up to 3.90m. Hill had two very good attempts at it, but was just unsuccessful.
Hill said: "It was great to get the first competition out of the way. Coming from 44 degree heat and windy conditions to the cool, still conditions of indoor competition is always an interesting challenge, but I feel good and this was just what I needed.
"Winning always makes you feel like the competition went well, and it was great to get a gold medal.
"Now I can get some more training in before the Linde Lansing International match next weekend in Cardiff."
