AS rowing coach Fred George contemplates easing up on his coaching duties after more than 40 years he can reflect on a hugely successful past 12 months.
Fred, a member of Worcester Rowing Club, was behind 14 winners including a gold medal at the WJ15 double sculls at the National Championships in Nottingham with Wycliffe College duo Fern Cotterill and Philappa Turner.
He has been a member at Worcester since 1952 and began coaching in 1960 but his proudest achievement has been the discovery of talented Worcestershire duo Cott-erill and Turner.
"I spotted the two girls at Worcester and suggested they work together and in their first race they won handsomely and it has continued from there," he said.
"Both are remarkable and probably the best I have ever coached and I think they can go as far as the Olympics."
Although Fred, from Perdiswell, will be coaching less he still trains four times a week and is hoping to enter the National Ergo's Rowing Champion-ships at the NEC.
