David Attwood (Your Letters, December 13) writes at some length on the problems of driving in Malvern with regard to the traffic calming in Somers Park Road/ Church Road.

He seems to forget the initial point, which is that many drivers drive far too fast down these roads, putting at increased risk the lives of children and others who may be crossing the road.

I can include myself among those who at times have driven faster than is wise down this road, but I believe it is up to us as car drivers to be aware of our actions and take full responsibility for how we drive.

I have been driving far more considerately down these roads since I heard the traffic calming was to be put into place. Does it really make a difference if we arrive at the bottom of Church Road two minutes quicker, rather than driving with more awareness and consequently more slowly?

The roads are designed to be driven on, but they are not the sole property of car drivers and should be treated with respect and acknowledgement that pedestrians and cyclists may also be using or crossing the road. Possession of a car brings with it responsibilities as well as benefits.

I would agree with Mr Attwood that these measures in themselves don't necessarily solve the problem, but they do serve to remind us as road users that we have a duty to drive more responsibly.

I look forward to the next move by the council in putting traffic calming measures into place in Albert Park Road, which clearly needs the same reminders to drivers.

Julian Brown, Albert Park Road, Malvern.
