ONE of the biggest Christmas productions ever staged by Upton CE Primary School took place at a special service at the Parish Church yesterday (Thursday).

Key Stage 1 pupils, aged four to seven, had spent many weeks practising their parts for The Helpful Angel.

The musical depiction of an angel appointed by God to announce Jesus' birth was written by John Frith, of Worcestershire Instrumental Music Service, who also provided the keyboard accompaniment.

This was being followed by a series of readings and carols which told the story of the first Christmas, from the point where the Helpful Angel gives the good news.

Headteacher Mark Mumby said it had taken a lot of work to organise, as it was longer than their usual Christmas performance by at least 20 minutes.

However, he added that staging the production had been good for the children. "It's excellent," he said. "It fits in really well with developing the arts at the school."

Parents of the children and friends of the school attended the event. A collection was held in aid of Anajali School in Nairobi.
