BESIDES caring for the homeless and those who will be alone at Christmas, a national charity is asking Worcestershire people to spare a thought for the elderly.
More than half-a-million older people in the United Kingdom are abused and neglected every day, says the charity, Action on Elder Abuse.
Calls to the charity's national helpline, 080 8808 8141, show that most victims are aged over 70 and may be robbed, beaten, harassed, humiliated or assaulted, either at home or in care.
"We know that abuse thrives in secrecy and abusers hate outside attention," said chief executive Gary FitzGerald.
"So this Christmas, check on you elderly neighbour and make sure he or she is safe, or visit a care home in your area.
"Your very presence may improve someone's life."
