ONE in five small business owners in the two counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire will be working on Christmas Day, according to research.

One in 10 small business owners also plan to work on New Year's Day, according to the latest survey by Alliance & Leicester Business Banking (A&LBB).

Only half of the small firms surveyed are planning to shut completely over the Christmas period.

Sole traders are least likely to be taking the whole festive period off. Only 44 per cent say they are taking the whole eight days off between Christmas Day and New Year's day.

Almost one in five (17 per cent) say they will work every day except Christmas Day itself.

A kind-hearted seven per cent of small business owners will be working over the entire Christmas period so that their staff can take a break.

A&LBB's Business Barometer asked a representative sample of 500 small business owners with an annual turnover of less than £1m what their plans were over the Christmas and New Year period (24 December to 1 January).
