HARVINGTON Golf Society staged its Christmas Awayday at the Vale Golf and Country Club.

Twenty-four players took part and the format for the day was an 18-hole medal in the morning on the International Course followed by a nine-hole medal after lunch on the Lenches Course where the rule was only three clubs, one of which had to be a putter!

Good weather and equally good course management by Mark Heath and his staff meant that some excellent scores were returned on a day which would also determine the society's Golfer of the Year.

The morning round was won on countback by Bob Claude from new member Mike Filleul, both recording excellent 69s, while another new member, Andy Smith finished third on 72.

The afternoon three-club challenge was an equally competitive affair with yet another new member, Paul Harper, winning with a one under par 34.

Seven players each then returned level par 35s which, after countback, saw Craig Moss finish second and Charlie Loh third.

The Councillor's Cup for over 55s was won by the evergreen Pete Addis.

Once again consistency proved to be the key to winning the Golfer of the Year when, after finishes of seventh, fifth, second and first at this year's awaydays and a semi-finalist in the society knockout, Matthew Mills was crowned champion.
