A FAMILY is in shock following the death of a "devoted" mother-of-four who was in collision with a car at the weekend.

Shirley Royle, 46, died at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Tuesday morning as a result of injuries sustained in the accident on the A451 Stourport Road in Kidderminster at 5.50pm on Saturday.

It happened near Foley's Fish Bar and the junction with Northumberland Avenue and left a section of the busy road closed for one-and-a-half hours.

Mrs Royle, who lived in nearby Tomkinson Drive, was a night care assistant at The Grange, which provides homes for elderly people in Sutton Park Road, Kidderminster, for nine years.

She was walking across the road when she was in collision with a Renault Megane Scenic, driven by a Bridgnorth woman who was unhurt.

Two ambulances were called to the scene and the road was closed from 6pm until 7.30pm.

Mrs Royle's husband Don said she was a "devoted" mother-of-four.

"We are still in shock and the news has not really sunk in yet," he added.

"She was a very much loved wife and mother and we will miss her dreadfully."

Lynne Watson, home manager at The Grange, said: "We are all naturally very sad and upset as Shirley was a very valued member of staff.

"Shirley was an asset to the home and a lovely person whose personality was perfect for her job.

"The home is very saddened by the loss of Shirley and our thoughts are with her family."

PC Nick Ferguson, of Kidderminster Police divisional traffic unit, said: "An investigation has been opened to try to establish the events which led to this incident taking place.

"We are asking for anyone who was in the area at around that time, whether or not they saw the actual collision take place, to contact us as they may be able to assist with our inquiries."
