THE Mayor of Worcester joined in with a glass of Christmas cheer at the Odeon Cinema as part of an Evening News promotion.

Councillor Robert Rowden made a flying visit to the Worcester Odeon on Foregate Street, but unfortunately didn't have the time to see the film, The Importance of Being Earnest.

"I did not see the film, it turned out to be a very busy morning," said Coun Rowden.

However dozens of Evening News older readers were able to enjoy the film, when they packed out the cinema for yesterday's screening.

The film, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play, stars Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Judi Dench and Reese Witherspoon.

This is the 21st year the Evening News has run the promotion where senior citizens can see a film for free.

Last year, readers enjoyed another Judi Dench film, Chocolat, also starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp

"Usually, we only have two showings but this year, we've put on an extra one because it is so popular," said Sarah Harris, part of the Evening News team behind the promotion. "This year has been the most successful so far."

The award-winning mince pies were provided by Greggs the baker.

The last of the three screenings at the Odeon will be held today.
