Bretforton 1, Bath Buccaneers 0

SATURDAY'S was the last league game before the mid season break and the first of the return matches.

Bretforton had Phil Talbot to thank for standing in at the last minute to umpire and, after a delayed start, the match was cut to 30 minutes each way.

The first half saw good play from the villagers who were determined the keep their undefeated league record intact.

There were few chances for either team to get on to the score sheet despite good play from midfielders Sophie Corbett and Lisa Workman.

The deadlock was broken ten minutes into the second half when Bretforton were awarded a short corner. Sarah Adams pushed out to Jane Wheeler who struck the ball towards goal where Andrea Cole neatly deflected

the ball into the net.

Bretforton then found themselves under considerable pressure in the latter stages of the half with and had player of the match Blanche Surman and Wheeler to thank for keeping them in the match as both players cleared the ball off the line more than once.

The umpires agreed that the extra five minutes of the half could be played and it was again thanks to Wheeler that Bretforton managed to hold on to their slim lead and retain their position at the top of the league.

The match ball was sponsored by Carrie Stowe.

St Gregs 1, Bretforton II 3

BRETFORTON came from behind in a match sponsored by True Colours Vehicle Body Repairs to take the points and second position in the league.

Having lost a home game earlier in the season to the Cheltenham hosts, the first half looked as if it was going to be the same result as Gregs seized the early initiative and created most of the chances.

However, a series of confident saves by player of the match Fiona Jordan kept the visitors in the game.

Saints, however, took the lead with a fine strike that flew inside the left post but fortunes changed in the second half as Bretforton began to wake up and started to play better as a team.

The real boost came with the equaliser when Julie Hall put in some good work on the edge of the area to set up Sarah Bragg who pushed the ball just inside a post.

Marion Icke, Jude Edgehill, Hannah Jordan and Dawn Thatcher kept things tight at the back, while Liz Murray-White put in another good performance on the right wing to set up their second goal with a flying cross which Tracey Hodgkins connected with.

Midfielders Amy Trotman and Abbey Gisbourne provided the forwards with more opportunities but it wasn't until the dying seconds when victory was sealed.

Hodgkins and Bragg made a the quick break with the former deciding not to take the shot herself, leaving Bragg to do the honours.

The side returns to action in the new year with a friendly against Pershore on January 4 before the league starts up again seven days later.
