I REPLY to Mr Hulls (Your Letters, November 8) regarding his objection to the proposed reduction in speed limit on the Upton to Welland road.
As a local driving instructor I believe any improvements to road safety can only, and should only, be welcomed.
Any reduction of a driver's speed will decrease the chance of a fatality. There have been many road user safety campaigns on television that make this point very clear.
The issue I would like to raise, more importantly, is the issue of a new lower speed limit making "instant criminals"' of the previously law-abiding motorist. One would only become a criminal and pick up fines and possibly bans if the driver chose to ignore the new speed limit.
Are we to believe these drivers would continue to drive that road at the previous 60mph limit and then be angered that they then receive a fine or, God forgive, a ban! I surely hope not.
My final point is this: what's the rush anyway?
