A NEWLY-constructed dam across a brook at Longdon Marsh has raised new flood worries for people in the Longdon and Upton-upon-Severn areas.

The dam would increase the level of water in a substantial tributary to Longdon Brook, bringing it to within a few inches of the road, town councillors heard.

Longdon, Queenshill and Holdfast Parish Council brought the matter to the attention of Upton Town Council, saying that in view of the meagre few inches difference in river levels between Upton and Longdon Marsh such an obstruction was a "great cause for concern" to property owners.

It was obvious to parish councillors that water would be impounded above the dam, effectively reducing the capacity of the flood plain, the letter said.

An Environment Agency officer was believed to have been present when the dam was constructed and one theory was that it was part of a proposed Wetlands Scheme for Longdon Marsh, being introduced "by the back door."

The parish council has written to the Environment Agency with numerous questions.

West Worcestershire MP Sir Michael Spicer has also raised questions with the Environment Agency.

An Agency spokesman said a letter of reply had been drafted to the parish council and to Sir Michael, but declined to give any further information until the letter had been received.

Upton councillors have agreed to ask Longdon Parish Council to keep them informed of what happens.
