A GUIDE to help old people protect their homes from the perils of winter has been published by Age Concern.

A Practical Guide for Protecting and Maintaining Your Home, gives the elderly tips on how to prepare their homes for winter, how to cope with storm damage and what to do if pipes burst.

The guide advises older people to know where the mains water stop valve is and that they can turn it off if a pipe bursts. It also advises ensuring fences and gates are properly maintained to minimise wind damage.

Other tips include checking all gutters for cracks and clearing them of debris, making sure tanks and pipes are properly lagged and repairing dripping taps. You are advised to check electric fires are guarded and flexes on electrical appliances are undamaged.

"Homeowners need to take action now to ensure that their home is protected this winter," said Lynne Matthews, Age Concern Hereford & Worcester.

"It is also a good idea to check that your home and contents insurance policy give you the cover you need."
