THE city's first public footbridge to span the Worcester to Birmingham canal is finally nearing completion.

The eight-ton bow-shaped bridge will be a direct walkway from the city, providing links to the canal towpath and the St Modwen retail development in Tallow Hill.

The bridge will be swung into position by a giant crane next Sunday by designers, Underwoods Steel Stockholders, in Tallow Hill.

"It's a significant development," said director David Underwood.

"It's designed to link the new shopping complex and the canal so it should really open up the city and be safer for pedestrians."

The bridge took four people three months to create.

It measures 60ft long and 6ft wide. Specially-rolled British Steel was used to cope with the camber design over the massive span.

Councillor Derek Prodger said the St Modwen development was an important development for the city.

"I certainly can't remember another public footbridge being built across the canal and I've been here over 60 years," said Coun Prodger.

"It will help open up the canal, which is certainly an important area for development in the city centre.

"It's a pleasant walk along the canalside and this can only improve the network."

The Tallow Hill development has been going on for nine months and looks on target to be ready by Christmas.

The site will house DIY giant Wickes, office retailer Staples, Tiles R Us, Dreams Bed Superstore, Wilsons Pets and Carphone Warehouse.
