MALVERN Town registered their first win of the season with a convincing display against their Nottinghamshire Alliance opponents in this FA Carlsberg Vase first qualifying round tie.

MALVERN TOWN 5, RAINWORTH MW 0

Town's success means that they now visit fellow West Midland League Premier Division outfit Brierley Hill in the second qualifying round on September 21.

There was little doubt that it was going to be Town's day when Dean Roberts set up Lee Hooper in the 17th minute and his shot from the edge of the box took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

The visitors had come closest to taking the lead immediately prior to Hooper's strike, when a 25 yard drive was brilliantly saved by 'keeper Dave Alden.

Dean Roberts, who was at the heart of most of Malvern's attacking play, combined well with Darren Wade in the 27th minute and the latter's excellent far post header set up 17-year-old prodigy Hooper to score from close range.

Moments later, Hooper might have had a hat trick, but despite having the goal at his mercy mistimed his header from close range.

Town were now well on top and another Wade cross in the 35th minute was brilliantly met be Des Cox, who headed powerfully home.

Dean Roberts looked to have got himself on the scoresheet just before the break, but having headed home under pressure from the beleaguered Rainworth goalkeeper, Roberts was adjudged to have impeded him.

With Malvern's place in the next round virtually assured, the second half was a little anti climatic, but Town still continued to create good chances.

Rick Halion, who along with Adam Ward was a driving force in the centre of Town's midfield, twice worked openings for himself, but on both occasions blazed over with the goal at his mercy.

Malvern continued to press and in the 62nd minute, Cox worked an excellent opening for himself, before firing home for his second goal and his side's fourth of the afternoon.

With Cox and Hooper both seeking hat-tricks, it was the former who looked like he had bagged the match ball in the 87th minute, but having chipped the keeper, the ball didn't have enough momentum and Hooper was on hand to convert the simplest of chances, to secure his first senior hat-trick.

Town general manager Richard Anson said: "We did all right for the most part and once we had scored our second goal, I don't think the result was ever in doubt. It was very important we secured a win today as we haven't really got going yet."
