RESIDENTS can give their views on ambitious plans for the transformation of Worcester city centre this weekend.

The plans, which focus on making the High Street, College Street and Deansway, safer and more attractive, are on show in the Guildhall, in the High Street, today, from 10am to 4pm.

The public exhibition features several options for the revamping of the High Street, which is seen as tired and in need of a face-lift.

The proposals, which are also aimed at linking the High Street with the Cathedral, Royal Worcester Porcelain and The King's School, follow an earlier public consultation in July.

"The High Street is seen as very tired," said Councillor Robert Rowden, Mayor of Worcester.

There are also proposals for the resurfacing of the High Street, probably with block paving, after holes dug by utility companies over the years have left patches of "unsightly" Tarmac.

Benches in the High Street would be repainted and the woodwork replaced.

Plans for College Street and Deansway, meanwhile, focus on safety, as there have been 26 casualties - mainly pedestrians and cyclists - recorded in the area in the last three years.

The initiative is a joint county and city council one.

The final options will be displayed to the public in spring 2003, with preparatory work on College Street and Deansway due to start in autumn 2003 and work on the High Street early in 2004.
