A SPA school is to host a major national tour this week - aimed at getting youngsters to make their own music.

Droitwich Spa High, in Briar Mill, is expecting a visit from music maker Yamaha's James Sergeant and Claire Inskip.

The event, on Friday, November 15, is organised by Yamaha and the BBC and will give pupils a taste of songwriting.

Both experts will stage a concert, showcasing the latest keyboards and music production technology. Then youngsters will take part in a nation-wide song writing competition.

Musical equipment and the chance to have their composition professionally recorded and produced, will be up for grabs.

It will also unveil tricks of the trade which musicians use when writing music and the students will be shown how to get the best out of the instruments currently in their music department.

"We are delighted to be part of this exciting venture," said Music head, Kevin Dowson. "Music is an important factor in the lives of young people and we think this innovative experience will help encourage more students to have a go at playing instead of just listening."

The tour coincides with the launch of a new Cool Keys school pack with a 60 minute video. Fronted by music TV star, Jools Holland, the film aims to inspire youngsters to play keyboards through talks about techniques and composing.
