WITH the outstanding performances by New Labour councillors who played to the gallery at the full council meeting on November 5, one would feel that they must be considered for further roles with the coming of the pantomime season.
No one with whom I have spoken wants the Swan Theatre to close. However, the huge sums of public money that are called for by both the Swan and the New Labour councillors to subsidise the theatre must be judged alongside other more morally justified cases.
The £6,600 of public money required every week by the Swan would, if available, pay for more than 20 of our elderly labelled "bed blockers" to be looked after in a care home, or almost 500 elderly or the less fortunate to have at least one substantial hot meal every day of the week.
As for the comments by Philip Hytch on the previous long-term commitment by his colleagues in funding the Swan, they just demonstrate the irresponsibility by the then ruling New Labour councillors to commit, when there were growing deficits in the council budget.
