AN evening of exciting foot-tapping music is on offer when Worcester Festival Choral Society brings Africa and Brazil to Worcester Cathedral.

David Fanshawe's African Sanctus is the centrepiece of the concert on Saturday, November 16, in which recordings of music and sound made by the composer during his extensive travels in Africa are played as the choir sings and a percussion section plays.

David Fanshawe walked alone from Egypt to Uga-nda recording the music of over 50 tribes, and during his travels endured snake bites, a plane crash and a close encounter with a hippo.

Also on the programme is Constant Lambert's jazz-inspired The Rio Grande, describing a Brazilian resort on carnival day, scored for piano, percussion and chorus.

The demanding piano part is played by Tom Winpen-ney, former organ scholar of Worcester Cathedral, and the soprano soloist is Claire Prewer.

After the concert, there will be a retiring collection for the Southern African Appeal of the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The concert, conducted by Adrian Lucas, starts at 7.30pm, and tickets (£18 - £3.50) are available from Worcester Tourist Information Centre on 01905 726311, the cathedral shop, 01905 640645 or wfcs4tickets@aol.com.
