some weeks ago I read with dismay of plans to extend the 40mph limit on the Upton to Welland Road past the barn that has been crashed into on two occasions in the past year.

Sixty miles an hour is a perfectly safe speed to travel the said stretch of road, weather conditions and other road users permitting.

Extending the limit will thus make criminals of drivers who are driving perfectly sensibly.

While it is patently regrettable that there has been a fatality on the road, there will always be danger when people drive too quickly in bad weather or faster than the current limit (70mph is too fast).

People who crash at the location in question will continue to do so whether the limit is sixty or forty. However, if the forty limit is extended, the previously conscientious and law abiding motorist will be an instant criminal.

No doubt in the seemingly hysterical drive to slap ludicrous speed limits everywhere, to the detriment of the lives of sensible motorists who pick up fines, and possibly even bans, the extension has already been approved in the name of political correctness; let's hope it hasn't.
