A TATTOO artist is the person to thank for the name Lukash, because the name actually belongs to him.

Singer and guitarist with Lukash, Carl Lewish, said the name came about after he discovered his American friend's surname.

Carl, a music teacher, also tells me the name is Polish, and a teacher at the college he teaches at has a son with the same name, but spelt differently.

Aside from Carl, Lukash, who have been going for 11 months, consists of Joe Singh on drums and Adam Hood on bass and backing vocals.

"People have said our music is across the board, from Muse to the Strokes," Carl says.

"But it's really difficult to pigeonhole us and that's what we like."

Carl says it was thanks to his father that he got into music at the age of two.

"My dad played keyboards and sang. He taught me the drums," says Carl. His dad passed away seven years ago.

"I must have been about 14 when I started playing guitar and singing.

"At that age I was into Nirvana. They got people into rock music.

"There's a lot of music papers around at the moment saying they changed a lot of people's lives and they changed my life."

Carl says he still drums and currently plays them with Worcester artist Jules Benjamin, below.

"I owe a lot to Jules in my songwriting," says Carl, who lives in St John's, Worcester.

"He's been an amazing talent.

"He should have been signed years ago.

"Jules' new album is exceptional."

Carl has been teaching at a college in Redditch since January. It's his first teaching placement.

"It's cool," he says.

"At the moment I'm teaching songwriting but I teach everything across the board and music technology."

Carl says his ambition is to push the band as far as possible.

"I'd like to make a lot of money and open a music institute in Worcester where kids could come along," he said.

Lukash will be playing at The Marr's Bar on Friday, November 15.

Tickets are £3, or £5 on the door.
