MORE than a thousand people braved the bad weather to attend the 28th Grand Charity Fair at Malvern Theatres on Saturday.

Despite torrential rain outside, 40 local organisations took part in what was Malvern's largest fundraising event of the year, organised by Community Action.

Mike McKnight, chief officer at Community Action, said the event had been a great success with around 1,500 people showing up.

"The feedback we've had has been tremendous. One stallholder said they raised £400. People turned up, they wanted to be there and they put an awful lot of work into it," he said.

The fair was opened in the Forum by the mayor of Malvern, Coun Frances Victory, who also judged the best dressed stall competition, won by Malvern Special Families.

Planning has now begun for next year's event.

Mr McKnight said he hoped a sponsor could be found, after none were forthcoming this year. The lack of backing meant that Community Action had to pick up the cost of the event, some £2,000. He asked that any businesses who could support the event call him on 01684 580638.

Another charity fair, held at the United Reformed Church hall, Malvern Link on Saturday raised £275 for seven local charities.

"We had a reasonable morning, not quite as many people due to the rain," said organiser Rose Worth.
