I was pleased to see Rev Dr Edward Morris's letter (10 Oct) highlighting the issue of access to the London bound platform at Evesham Station following the precipitous removal of the barrow crossing. He rightly asks what our elected representatives are doing to keep this issue on the boil and seek to find a solution to the problem. I raised the issue at a Evesham Public Forum conducted by Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council. No one from either council felt it necessary to attend the meeting which was attended by Thames Trains and Railtrack to 'explain' their actions. It is not explanations we really want it is a solution to the problem. Councils at all levels must have accessibility to public services high on their priorities. Our MEP Liz Lynne is the European Parliament Rapporteur for the Year of Disabled, has been in close contact with Disability Awareness in Schools (DAIS) who are leading the campaign.

Responses from Thames Trains to proposed alternative accesses are producing astonishing figures - £450,000 to provide ramped access footbridge; £300,000 to provide access from Worcester Road. Providing lift access to the footbridge has not been considered. Nor has the simplest solution, which still exists at Moreton in Marsh Station, the construction of a new level crossing at the other end of the platform. Incidentally, during a walk along a bridle path across fields between Broad Campden and Paxford, I crossed a newly constructed gated, signed, level crossing (on a single line stretch of the track) with newly installed telephones either side for walkers and riders to use in order to cross safely. Thank you Railtrack, something similar would do quite nicely at Evesham Station.
