GOLF: Shatterford's Pete Williams is driving his way to the brink of international golfing glory after putting in the round of his life to reach the prestigious finale of the Wilson Matchplay Championships.
Williams, 37, flies out to Portugal for the 72-hole final in January after blasting his way through the last-round eliminator to qualify as the West Midlands representative.
The assistant greenkeeper will go head-to-head with five other finalists from around Britain at the Vale Do Lobo course under the eye of the Sky Sports cameras.
The Matchplay competition attracted more than 6,000 entries and Williams battled through five rounds.
Playing off a six-handicap, Williams kept hitting the greens and holing his putts at Sandwell Park Golf Club, aided by caddie Liz Newton.
He said: " I know I played well but I can't believe I've made it through to the final.
"My aim was just to get to Portugal but now I'm there I'm just going for it and hoping I can bring the title back to the West Midlands."
