AN ICON of dodgy dealing is being used by the DVLA to make people aware that as of February next year they can't buy a tax disc without their car's log book.

Del Boy and Rodney's beloved Reliant Regal, from Only Fools and Horses, pulled up outside Worcester Police Station on Castle Street to let everybody know about the change in status of the logbook, or V5.

The V5 contains important information about vehicles on the road and their owners, and the DVLA hopes that if all logbooks are kept, it might slash car crime.

"In the UK half a million vehicles are stolen each year, representing a cost of £3bn to the economy," said David Jamieson, junior transport minister.

"Many of the cars stolen are put up for sale only to be bought by unsuspecting buyers.

"One of the best ways that car buyers can protect themselves from unknowingly buying a stolen vehicle is to request its V5.

"We're delighted to be using the Trotter's Reliant Regal - believe it or not, the owner has the car's V5."

Currently it is possible to buy a tax disc on completion of a V5 request form, but as of February, motorists will have to produce the V5 or V11 renewal reminder form.
