I AGREE wholeheartedly with D E Margrett's comments about today's so-called soccer stars (You Say, October 9).

Like him, I saw Stanley Matthews just once, when he played for Blackpool in the days when 60,000-70,000 crowds were a fairly regular occurrence.

He was the best player I have seen, and unlike today's pampered players, he was very rarely unfit to play.

In those days it was quite legal to shoulder charge the goalkeeper, ball and all, into the net for a goal. It was a real man's game.

Stanley Matthews is a legend because he didn't talk a good game - his twinkling feet did the business and large crowds were there to prove it.
