BEN Smith could be a dramatic late addition to Hereford United's squad for their Nationwide Conference clash with Halifax Town at Edgar Street tomorrow (3pm).

The midfielder, who has yet to play a competitive match for the Bulls after dislocating a shoulder in pre-season, was due to take part in a friendly match at Telford last night.

If deemed fit enough, Smith could find a place on Hereford's bench.

Bulls boss Graham Turner also had better news on skipper Ian Wright who broke his arm in the midweek home defeat against Northwich, with initial fears he could face a lengthy lay off.

"The bone is broken but it is not as bad as first feared," said Turner.

"He's in some pain and discomfort but he could be back playing sooner rather than later, with a plaster cast on."

Smith's return to action would be a huge bonus said Turner as he contemplates halting a run of two defeats.

"Ben has returned to training full of enthusiasm and as well as somebody who can create chances, he can also score as well, though tomorrow's match might be a bit early for him."

Danny Williams is expected to play despite picking up a recent ankle injury while Richard Teesdale stands by to take Wright's place in the line up.

Striker Steve Guinan, however, is doubtful after sustaining a knee injury against Northwich.

The in-form Shaymen who arrive undefeated in four games with three wins under their belt will be another stern test of Hereford's hesitant home form that has seen them win just twice this season.

Turner insists that they must defend better and said his strikers should not have to score three goals just to win at Edgar Street.

"We played well with the ball and created chances against Northwich but we have also to defend properly and as a team," he said. "We've conceded four goals in our last two matches including two at home and having to score three at home to win is not acceptable.

"It's easy to say we can put things right just by scoring but we have to learn to defend as a team because we are conceding too many goals."

Halifax arrive boosted by the extension Ryan Mallon's loan period by another month. The Sheffield United winger has played a big part in the Shaymen's recent revival.

The 18-year-old has made only one League appearance for the Blades and United boss Neil Warnock is happy for the teenager to get some first-team experience in the Conference.

FORMCAST: It all points to a point for Bulls, 1-1.
