A LITTLE while ago Malvern Link was given the golden opportunity to expand its shopping area with the proposed arrival of the prestigious German supermarket, Lidl.

The proposal was short lived, however, with the decline of planning permission on some cock and bull story about traffic congestion! Now we read in the Malvern Gazette (October 11) that there is a new problem over two trees.

Our family have been shoppers at Lidl since their arrival in Britain and have nothing but praise for their immaculate shops, excellent quality products and extremely keen prices.

Some argue that we do not need another supermarket - but we don't need another charity shop, we don't need another card shop, we don't need another building society, but we are sure to get all three of them!

A supermarket to challenge Safeway is needed. Lidl won't affect our local Somerfield stores or Waitrose, or even the newly revamped Coop because they all have their loyal supporters. Currently the financial rumour machine is talking about Walmart taking over Safeway, which brings the Americans into our backyard. We are in Europe and the opportunity got get a little competition from another European supermarket must be taken up.

Currently Lidl shoppers have to go to the other side of Worcester to benefit from their products and prices.

A Lidl store in the Link would attract shoppers from the west side of Worcester as well as Malvern people. And a nice looking supermarket on Worcester Road would be infinitely better than the weed strewn site we have there now.

Come on councillors, vote yes to Lidl's planning permission in November and show you are really interested in bringing more business, more employment and a little more competition to our noble town which can only be for the greater benefit of all of us who choose to live here.
