I appreciate the coverage you have given to the Ashperton Campaign for Traffic Safety and I wish to ensure that pressure is kept on Herefordshire Council to treat this matter with greater urgency than appears to have been the case previously.

In addition, I would hope that West Mercia Police will endorse the campaign we are mounting for a reduced speed limit and will be seen to be enforcing the law, particularly during school opening and closing times, which represent the most danger to the children and parents of Ashperton School.

Active communication is taking place with Herefordshire Council, however, results of a site meeting some months ago are still not available and such tardiness in positively addressing these issues has led to the launch of this campaign.

In the Annual Progress Report July 2002, contained within the Hereford Local Transport Plan there is actually an underspend on Local Road Safety Strategy due to "staff recruitment and office move". When most councils complain of under funding as the reason for cut backs it is astonishing to see an under spend.

It is unfortunate that the Governing criteria on the safety issues raised seem to be the lack of death or injury so far.

Let's not be wise after the event and make sure the council acts now to ensure this never happens.
