MALVERN Rugby Club's Youth Development Section has been awarded £4,200 through the National Lottery's Awards For All fund.

The money will be used to set up two community rugby projects that will take the sport to the rural areas of the Malvern Hills district.

It will also help the club to establish a district development squad for players' aged between 13-15 years old, to be given quality training from county staff coaches based at Malvern.

Gary Tolley, the club's Chairman of Youth Rugby, said, "The funds will be made available on November 1 and working closely with Malvern Hills District Council, the programme will start by establishing two rugby centres at Upton-upon-Severn and Sport Martley.

"There will be an intensive coach and referee development programme across the district involving primary school teachers and volunteers who will help run the centres with a view of the communities taking full ownership of the rugby centres by September 2003.

"The most important objective is to give young people from across the district, the chance to learn, enjoy and play rugby and to take exercise in safe and well supervised environments."

n Worcester Wanderers seconds had a convincing 55-0 win over their Woodrush counterparts.

They were ahead after five minutes following good running from the backs culminating in Wes Hawkins scoring the first try, converted by Roger James.

The Wanderers forwards were getting the upper hand in the rucks and mauls and forced Woodrush into giving away a penalty directly in front of the posts, stroked over by James.

Woodrush then rallied and only a great tackle from full-back Paddy Clear prevented their number eight going over.

Wanderers contained a period of Woodrush pressure in the third quarter and extended their lead with further tries from Andy Dey (2), Clear (2), Cownie, Chris Fawcett and Nigel Ford. James kicked five further conversions.

The victory was marred, however, when hooker AJ Harker suffered a fractured wrist and has undergone surgery to pin the bones.
