WHY is it left to people like Val Cowell (You Say, October 3) to tell us something of regionalisation?

Why doesn't government give us information? It was the Conservatives who signed the Maastricht Treaty but what did they tell us about it? Virtually nothing.

The present government is hell-bent on splitting the country into regions and, as I have said before in these columns, have been beavering away over the last five years paving the way.

But what have they told us of their endeavours? Again, nothing.

When governments hide the truth as they do, it can be for only one reason.

They know the electorate would not like it and would oppose it. They pursue it simply for their own idealistic dreams.

Where is Tony Blair's "open government"? Why is it only in the small print that we read once again that the EU's annual accounts will not be signed by the former chief accountant?

I say former, since Neil Kinnock has sacked her for "blowing the whistle".

That is the measure of the EU. It has, and is, costing us billions to be in the EU. Has not the time come for us to withdraw altogether?
