THIS Canadian songstress could easily be Alanis Morrisette's equally as angst-ridden little sister.

It's hard to believe someone who sings with this much attitude is only 17 but it seems she's part of an increasing new breed of musical youngsters just doing their thing.

She's gutsy and, like Ms Morrisette, tells real-life stories through her sassy lyrics - enough of them to keep teen show Dawson's Creek in backing tracks for another series.

Avril's chart hit Complicated, about 'life, people being fake and relationships', is about as poppy as the album gets.

Unwanted and Losing Grip - a rocky little number - are about confronting rejection and betrayal with some serious attitude, while Sk8er Boi tells the tale of a girl who thought she was too good for a skater, but failed to see the real him.

Anything But Ordinary is a country-tinged ode to individuality, Tomorrow is another rock-influenced track while I'm With You shows a more mellow side.

Too Much To Ask is as close as Avril's ever gonna get to a ballad while Things I'll Never Say and My World, in which she sounds a bit like Kirsty McColl, are more guitar-led. MC
