GETTING to grips with your teeth, feet and blood pressure will be just some of the advice available during a health day in the city.

The event, which is open to the public, is the first of its kind to be held at Worcester YMCA, and will also tackle issues such as mental and physical illness, homelessness and quitting smoking.

Drug Link, British Heart Foundation and MIND will be just some of the organisations giving help and advice at the Henwick Road venue.

Gerard Veness, deputy director at Worcester YMCA, said the idea began when Sally Hackett, a community nurse from South Worcestershire NHS Primary Care Trust came into the YMCA to talk about drugs and sexual health.

"From there, Sally and I talked about bringing into the YMCA professionals who would be happy to talk to residents about personal health issues," he said.

Mr Verness said one of the biggest subjects that might benefit some of the residents was that of mental health.

"Some of the residents suffer from depression and have lost some focus on life," he said.

Mr Verness said the YMCA housed around 21 youngsters between 16 to 25 years old in the Foyer part, while older residents were housed in the YMCA.

The event is being held tomorrow in the boardroom at the YMCA between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

"The idea of a health day is to encourage a healthy life style and local people can benefit too," said Mr Veness, who has worked at Worcester YMCA for nearly three years.

"We are keen to get the community in here."

Mr Veness added that each YMCA resident has a development worker to help assist them in life issues, such as rent, benefits, employment and health.

"After Thursday, support workers will still be working with people. For instance, if people are feeling down, they will have that health support."
