AN art deco cinema is on its way to becoming an upmarket entertainment venue after its planning applications were backed unanimously by councillors.

Wychavon Councillors approved a scheme for Evesham's Regal Cinema to become a two-screen picture house, complete with roof-top restaurant and a bowling alley.

Jack Hegarty, head of planning for Wychavon District Council said the roof-top restaurant would have a scenic view.

"You will have views of the north side of the river and Bredon Hill," he told the Development Control and Licensing Committee meeting.

The main concern for the Grade II Listed building was to keep its character and appearance when alterations took place.

The report highlighted English Heritage's wish to retain the art deco fittings and mouldings if work took place.

Mr Hegarty said he had received letters from residents concerned about the projection room and its historic projector.

"We're not losing the room. It's just being made smaller," he said.

"English Heritage has said it will be happy for the projector to remain in the museum or as a feature in the cinema."

Councillor Ron Cartwright suggested treating the building for soundproofing so noise would not disturb neighbours.

In September, the Evening News reported that a night club facility originally appeared in the plan. However, this was withdrawn by the cinema's agent's following advice from Wychavon's planning officers.

In April, the Regal was bought by a mystery buyer for an undisclosed sum after being closed for two months.

Councillor Tony Hotham expressed concern that the cinema may turn into a nightclub.

"This is the jewel in Port Street," said Coun John Payne.

"We now need to put the crown round it."
