EVESHAM Marina's plans to redevelop its leisure facilities have been deferred, after Wychavon councillors asked to see traffic figures.

Owners of the marina have been asked to estimate how traffic levels would change, if a two-story building went ahead.

Plans for the building, which will accommodate 29 staff, have been submitted to the Development Control and Licensing Committee.

In June, the Evening News reported how the development's owner had lashed out at Wychavon planners following rejection of the plans.

Claims dismissed

Tom Smith of Wakering Engineering Company dismissed claims the development would cause traffic chaos in Kings Road and Lichfield Road, as the council had already approved plans for a new marina basin.

Since this scheme was rejected in June, the new report before the committee on this week had overcome previous concerns by reducing the number of car parking spaces by 20. It also satisfied officers that the goods sold in the units would not compete with retail shops in the town centre.

The new planning application proposed seven units on the ground floor, to supply equipment to boat users, and a holiday reception and training room for clients on the first floor.

But Councillor Andrew Dyke said King's Road, nearby, had massive parking problems and congestion.

"The road surfaces are in a state of disrepair and more traffic would be detrimental to this road," he said.

"This application is bigger than the other one."

But Councillor George Bourne supported the development. "I think it will look lovely," he told the meeting.

"It will be an advantage to Evesham in the long run."

Jack Hegarty, head of planning for Wychavon District Council said he recommended a deferral of the application until the traffic issues were looked at and resolved.

After the meeting he told the Evening News the deferral would take between three to six weeks.
