THE latest film of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest recently finished a successful run at Malvern Cinema.
Fifty years ago this autumn, according to the Gazette, cinema-goers were enjoying the first-ever film version of the play, which starred Margaret Rutherford, Edith Evans and Michael Redgrave.
Just as Edward Fox, who appeared as the 2002 Earnest, has also just appeared on stage in Malvern in The Winslow Boy, so Margaret Rutherford (Miss Prism in the 1952 version) came here just after the film was released, in the title role of the play Miss Hargreaves.
Another film that has just been showing at the cinema is The Sum Of All Fears, an adaptation of Tom Clancy's thriller about a terrorist attack on the Superbowl.
This is odd, because the Gazette 25 years ago this month carried adverts for the film Black Sunday, based on the novel by Thomas Harris (creator of Dr Hannibal Lecter) about . . . yes, a terrorist attack on the Superbowl. Plus ca change!
