THE EW Evans Centenary Stableford competition is one of golf's unique competitions. Suggested by the membership in the club's centenary year, the competition is held over three separate Stableford competitions, played in the summer months.

Named after the centenary year's club captain, the winner is the first player to score 100 points in the three Stableford competitions. This year's winner is former club captain Stuart Bird and his performance has set a club record for the competition.

In the first round Stuart scored a credible, but not outstanding 37 points. His second round however was outstanding and in scoring 45 points, Stuart created a new course record with a gross score of four under par 67. In the third round Stuart achieved the 18 points he needed for the 100 points at the eighth hole. No other player has achieved the centenary points total in so few holes.

Partnered by local solicitor Dennis Chetwood, Stuart also won this year's Ledbury Cup. This knock out foursomes competition is played throughout the summer and Dennis and Stuart had a titanic struggle in the final against the ever reliable pairing of Peter Lupino and Wes Curtis. Three up at one stage, it took a four up the last hole for Stuart and Dennis to win the competition one up.

A team of senior golfers, strengthened by the addition of some younger club members, visited the St Mellons Golf Club at Cardiff to take on the Three Services Golfing Society in an 18 a side competition.

The day was particularly memorable for Dave Mackie who has been playing golf for over 45 years. At the 135 yard par three hole, using a seven iron, Dave achieved his first ever hole in one. From the tee, Dave could not see the bottom of the flag and ever the pessimist started searching for his ball in the rough at the back of the green. He was surprised and highly delighted when his opponent found his ball in the bottom of the cup.

In 2003 former Worcestershire Club director Francis Bird has been asked to captain the Three Services Golf Society, an honour he has been pleased to accept.

In the October Mid-week Stableford competition former secretary and club captain Garnet Scott was in good form returning the same score of 37pts as Brian Rose to be placed fourth and third respectively in Division One. Mike Jenkins also scored 37pts but as his back nine score bettered both Garnet and Brian, Mike was placed second. The winner of Division One was Charles Colthart with 38pts.

Ken Monk however achieved the best score of the day in Division Two with 39pts, one point better than Alan Foster and Gordon Jones who were placed second and third.

In the Ladies October Medal a net 69 was returned in Division One by former lady captain June Jones. June, playing off a handicap of 18, won Division One by three clear shots from Jos Douglas-Pennant who returned a net 70 to be second. Norma Pottinger continued her good recent form to obtain third place with a net 73. Joyce Hebbes and Maureen Riley each recorded two net scores of 69 in Division Two to be placed in first and second position respectively with Sue Field third with a net 70. Theresa Jackson won the 41-45 handicap section with a score of 31.

Jane Tromans won the Carrington Cup.
