College picks up award for drive to reduce cars

A NEW plan to reduce the numbers of cars arriving at Malvern Girls' College has been given the thumbs-up by Worcestershire County Council.

The School Travel Plan has been drawn up by staff and pupils, with a little help from the council.

Its aim is to encourage informal car sharing, organise road safety education for new pupils and introduce safer route maps and public transport information to the school's introductory literature.

Alywn Davies, the council's cabinet member for the environment and sustainability, presented the college with a certificate last Thursday.

This was to acknowledge all the benefits of that should accrue from the plan, as well as the hard work put into it by staff and pupils.

Coun Davies said: "I'm delighted to have presented the certificate to the college. It clearly demonstrates how committed they are to encouraging students to think about how they travel."

College head Philippa Leggate, said: "It has been a rewarding experience liaising with the county council and we look forward to working together in the future to improve our environment."
