IT was an awful pity that the programme letting the public know about spine diseases was on TV so late. I have Ataxia, which involves the nerves; the ones to my legs just don't work properly. I was diagnosed ten years ago and my muscles are working less and less well. I will eventually have to use a wheelchair but at the moment I live a fairly independent lifestyle.

I am having to move house very soon as in Malvern living on a hill is a prevalent situation, and my legs are unable to cope, so I'm moving into a ground floor flat which has been adapted for me.

Ataxia starts with lack of co-ordination and sometimes slurred speech, which leads everyone to believe you are drunk, and is very embarrassing, as you can imagine! As it is a little known condition it can take years for a correct diagnosis, so anyone with similar complaints may have found the answer!
