MALVERN Town council is to send a deputation to the district council in protest over waste skips that could be used while Newland Waste site is closed.

The town council has been asked by MHDC to consider sites for 40 skips which will be used to collect rubbish when the waste site is closed for 20 weeks for refurbishment.

Most other parishes have been asked to locate sites for two, with a couple, West Malvern and Malvern Wells Parish Councils, being asked to find sites for five. But Malvern town councillors this week objected to the move because of a 'duty of care' aspect attached to the siting of the skips, which means it would have to take responsibility for the site, waste deposited and the ordering and emptying of skips.

In a report to councillors meeting on Monday, town clerk Shirley Young pointed out that waste collection is a district council function while waste disposal is a Worcestershire County Council function.

Severn Waste Services, which runs the Newland site, still has no firm date for its temporary closure to upgrade facilities but it will not be within the next month, because notice is required.

Eight town councillors will join the deputation to MHDC, on a date to be decided.
