Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is, if possible, better than ever on this return visit to Malvern; a thoroughly entertaining and thought- provoking show from start to finish.

Arvid Larsen, as Joseph, brings a new dimension through his insightful characterisation in a powerful portrayal and by using his excellent voice with sincerity.

He matures as the show progresses and the reunion with his father, Jacob, played by James Head, is portrayed most movingly by both. The songs Is it really you? and then I closed my eyes were most poignant.

The show, directed by Bill Kenwright, was slick with many humorous touches: camels questioning What you goin' to do?, angels swinging and singing One more angel in heaven, Potiphar's seductive wife, Faye Michel, flirting outrageously, and the super Elvis take-off, complete with flashing lights.

There was some particularly slick ensemble work by the brothers, and Vivienne Carlyle as Narrator, sang clearly as she held the story together.

The accompanying backing group, directed by Kelvin Towse, was terrific and lighting, effects, and the set of pyramids and palms were spectacular.

The young choir was from the Cecilia Hall Dance Centre and was directed by Pat Stewart. The singing and behaviour of its members while on stage was exemplary.

Acrobatic dancers, colourful costumes, not least Joseph's magnificent coat, and host of familiar songs - there is even a fire-eater - make this a show for everyone.

Joseph continues until tomorrow (Saturday), with two shows each day at 5pm and 8pm. For tickets, contact the box office at Malvern Theatres on 01684 892277.
