Vampish songstress Sophie Ellis-Bextor will be making a hot date with Wolverhampton when she comes to the Civic Hall on Tuesday, January 28.

Sophie rose to stardom in the summer of 2000 with a DJ called Christiano Spiller and a song called Groovejet.

After a week-long campaign, Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) was number one.

A year may be a long long time in pop, but as the rumours about her direction started creeping out of the studio Sophie was hammering away on her album.

"I wanted to make pop music that didn't talk down to or patronise people," she said.

"Something with a bit of conviction and a bit of depth.

"There's not too much of that around."

The first single Take Me Home was a dance-floor hit.

Released precisely one year after Sophie had been number one with Spiller, it went to number two.

A short while afterwards, Sophie's debut album, Read My Lips made it straight in to the UK top five.

By the time her Murder On The Dancefloor single reached number two, things had gone stellar for the 22-year-old, borne out by her nomination in the Best Female category at the Brits.

Playing live is definitely my favourite medium," said Sophie.

"The amount of albums sold means a lot more to me now than it did before."

Sophie's story continued with the new single, Get Over You which came backed with the Alex James collaboration, Move This Mountain.

Different character

Sophie described it as the perfect accompaniment. "I love the fact that a melody can turn you into a different character, and that's what happens on this single," she said.

"Move This Mountain is about a relationship that's a bit strenuous and going through a really difficult time, then Get Over You is basically going 'I can't even be bothered to start it in the first place'."

Tickets to see Sophie are priced at £17.50 and are available from Midland Box Office on 01902 552121.

Lines are open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
