COMMUNITY-minded citizens across Wor-cestershire are being encouraged to have a major say in the policing methods of West Mercia Police.

The police authority, which is accountable for the service it provides, is seeking four new independent members to serve from April next year.

"Independent members come from all walks of life and I would strongly encourage everyone to consider the contribution they could make in this role," said Mrs Joyce Thomas, West Mercia Police Authority chairperson.

"The police service is undergoing major reform and you can play an active part in ensuring that we work with the chief constable to respond effectively to the policing needs of our local communities," she said.

Adding that it was important for the public to feel safe, she said: "By contributing to the work of the police authority, you would be helping to improve public confidence and reduce the fear of crime."

The authority has said prospective applicants must be willing to seek out the views of the local community on policing and be able to challenge accepted views on policing in a constructive way .

Additionally, he or she must have an understanding of the needs of the community and the pressures and challenges facing the police.

All four appointees should also represent a wide range of people in the community and act on their behalf.

West Mercia Police Authority is committed to equal opportunities, so minority ethnic groups and those with disabilities are invited to apply.

All applicants must be aged at least 21, live or work in the West Mercia area and be able to commit a minimum of 10 hours-a-week work for up to four years.
