CALLS for consultation on the future of Droitwich's magistrates court are being made by leading Spa politicians.

The Ombersley Street East building is earmarked for closure and both Peter Luff MP and Wychavon District Council's Labour leader, Councillor Roy Seabourne believe it should become a health centre.

The pair have put politics aside to campaign for community use at the prominent site, which is currently being considered for use by a police camera safety partnership.

They believe that while the project for cameras to reduce road accidents is important, the building could be used to ease pressure at the swamped medical centre, which is also in Ombersley Street East.

Coun Seabourne hopes to organise a public meeting in the coming weeks to gauge public opinion.

"There are three main issues," he said. "Firstly, the needs of the camera partnership could be satisfied in other office premises.

"Secondly, it's critical we find extra accommodation for the health centre and lastly, public consultation is definitely needed."

Mid-Worcestershire's Tory representative, Mr Luff, added that the court could not be lost to the people of the town.

"The court building was built to serve the local community and it should continue to do so in a meaningful and direct way," he said.

Opportunity

"Personally, I favour using this opportunity to improve health services in Droitwich, but there may be other, better ideas."

West Mercia Magistrates Courts Service hopes to shut the court because a majority of its cases are now dealt with in Worcester. The magistrates courts committee will make a final decision on Monday, October 21.
