THE green spirit has proved to be alive and well in Dines Green following the installation of a can recycling bank.

A pensioner on the Worcester estate is so pleased with the facility she has been loading her walking trolley with spent aluminium containers.

The can bank, which was put in place a few weeks ago, has been added to a paper and bottle bank by The Green Centre, behind DG Pharmacy.

"There is an elderly woman in her 80s, who lives on the estate and always uses the recycling facilities," said Councillor Margaret Layland, who works at the chemist DG Pharmacy.

"After seeing the can bank she came and collected any cans found in the gutter, put them in the trolley she uses to walk with, and then took them to the bank."

Coun Layland said people could also put tin foil into the can bank.

"You can put in any cans, whether steel or aluminium," said the 50-year-old.

"The bottle and paper bank have been here for a few years and have been well used.

"The can bank, provided by Worcester City Council, was placed here through demand because I had requests from people asking for this facility.

"There are other can banks at various supermarkets but they are difficult to get to without a car.

"One lady on the estate only uses local shops and now she'll be able to use this facility."

"The easier we make it for people to recycle, the more readily they do it," she said.

"There's a lot of support for recycling, in general."
