A FLIGHT over the Malvern Hills is just one of the exciting promises up for grabs at an auction in aid of a toy library.

The Borrowers Toy Library is planning to increase its range of items with the money raised from the big event.

Since the Evening News ran a plea in July, around 30 offers have been pledged, including the flight, tickets for Huntingdon Hall, free childminding and a bouquet of flowers.

The Malvern library already has 4,000 toys including outdoor climbing frames, bikes, baby equipment and special needs toys, but needs more.

The facility, in Barnards Green, is run by volunteers of all ages, two workers and a supervisor.

"Businesses have been very good," said Evelyn Cunningham, library chairwoman.

"And some of our toy library members have offered free childminding for three hours so parents will be able to go Christmas shopping on their own. Someone has also offered to make up a personal Christmas or birthday bouquet.

"Last year, a company offered a flight over the Malvern Hills, but because the auction went so well, the owner offered two flights in the end.

Birthday present

"One was a birthday present and one was for a woman who had always wanted to fly over the Hills."

Prizes last year included the services of a garden designer, cinema tickets, swimming passes and a trip to Royal Worcester Porcelain, where children were able to paint plates.

More than £650 was raised at the last auction, with many promises earmarked for Christmas presents.

"There are between 20 and 30 lots at the moment," said Mrs Cunningham, aged 52. "Last year we had children bidding as well.

"We're now looking for people to come and bid for the items - they'll be able to buy some superb gifts and presents.

"We'll also be doing a supper on the night of baked potatoes and chilli."

The auction of promises will take place in Powick Parish Hall on Friday, November 8, from 7.30pm. Tickets are £3 each.
