STAFF at the Evening News will be tucking into a delicious sponge cake next week to mark the paper's 65th birthday.

Colston Bakeries, in Newtown Road, Malvern, are making the Evening News cake out of Genoese sponge with a jam and cream filling.

The newspaper's birthday will be taking place on Wednesday, October 16 with almost £10,000 worth of reader prizes from Worcestershire businesses to give away.

"We contacted Colston and it very kindly agreed to bake a special birthday cake for Evening News staff," said Sarah Taylor, promotions executive for the paper.

"It's going to be specially iced with our birthday logo message in celebration of the anniversary.

"The cake will be around 17 inches square in size."

Colston Bakeries, which has been in existence for around 30 years, has other bakeries in Barnards Green, Malvern and St John's.

"My brother Jonathon is making the cake and I'm decorating it," said Peter Clarke, a partner of Colston Bakeries.

"We make about 50 cakes a week and people come back to us every year."
