A WORCESTER policeman who battled strong currents and freezing temperatures to save a capsized canoeist who was minutes from drowning is in line for a bravery award.
PC Andy Bennett will be among 10 people shortlisted for the Vodafone Life Savers Awards.
A regional presentation will be held at West Mercia police's Hindlip Hall headquarters next week.
And next month, the
39-year-old will meet the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, during a reception at 10 Downing Street, before attending a gala lunch at The Savoy Hotel.
The incident took place earlier this year, when Mr Bennett spotted a female canoeist in trouble on the flooded river.
Currents
In high winds, driving rain and extreme cold, the
father-of-three battled against the currents to bring the woman to safety.
"We have heard moving stories of incredible courage in all the awards and nominations," said Gavin Darby, chief executive of Vodafone UK.
"Many have exceeded all expectations to act above and beyond the call of duty. It has been an extremely difficult task for our judges to select the 10 national life savers but we felt that PC Bennett's achievement was particularly remarkable."
Mr Bennett's story was selected by the award's judges, which included Falklands veteran Simon Weston and TV presenter Gaby Roslin.
