BIDDING reached "dizzy heights" when four fascinating Upper Arley properties went under the hammer.
Arley Cottage, Forge Cottage, Naboth's Vineyard and Arley Tower went up for auction at Kidderminster's Gainsborough House Hotel last Thursday.
The Grade II listed tower, a historic folly built in 1842 under the orders of Lord Mountnorris - who was living in Arley Castle and did not want to see the village pub from his window - was sold for £142,000.
But Arley Cottage, which has 16th century origins, eventually went for £846,000, nearly £300,000 more than expected, after a round of dramatic bidding.
The guide price of £150,000 for Forge Cottage, which overlooks the village cricket ground, reflected the extensive refurbishment needed - but it still fetched £256,000.
Naboth's Vineyard was sold privately immediately before the auction, which was conducted by the Birmingham and Worcester offices of Knight Frank.
